- Erosional Classification: Deflation hollows and caves are erosional landforms formed by wind action in arid/desert regions.
- Deflation Hollow Formation: Weathered mantle over rocks or bare soil is blown out by the persistent movement of wind currents blowing in one direction, creating shallow depressions called deflation hollows or blowouts.
- Connection to Oases: In depressions formed where the wind blows away the sand, an oasis is formed when underground water reaches the surface.
- Cave Formation Process: Deflation also creates numerous small pits or cavities over exposed rock surfaces. The rock faces suffer from the impact and abrasion of wind-borne sand, first forming shallow depressions called blowouts. Over time, some of these blowouts become deeper and wider until they are fit to be called caves.
- Human Significance: These landforms influence human settlement patterns and agriculture in arid regions.
