Annexation of sindh Upsc Ncert notes

  • Background and British Fear of Russia: In the late 1830s, the East India Company grew worried that Russia might expand across Asia and enter India from the north-west.
  • Objective to Secure the North-West: Driven by the fear of Russian expansion, the British sought to secure their control over the north-west region.
  • War in Afghanistan: Prior to taking over Sind, the British fought a prolonged war with Afghanistan between 1838 and 1842 and established indirect Company rule there.
  • Takeover of Sind: Following these developments in the north-west, Sind was taken over in 1843.
  • Subsequent Expansion: After Sind, the next territory in line for the Company was Punjab, which was eventually annexed in 1849 after the death of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and two prolonged wars.
