Deflation

  • Definition and Mechanism:
    • Deflation involves the lifting and removal of dust and smaller particles from bare soil or rock surfaces by the persistent movement of wind currents.
    • Wind erosion occurs when strong winds lift and carry away these loose particles of sand and soil, especially in dry, sandy, or semi-arid regions with sparse vegetation or prolonged drought.
  • Resulting Landforms & Features:
    • Deflation Hollows (Blowouts): Shallow depressions created when wind currents blow out the weathered mantle or loose surface material. When a deflation hollow is excavated deeply enough to reach the underground water table, an oasis forms.
    • Pits and Cavities: Deflation creates numerous small pits or cavities over rock surfaces.
    • Desert Pavements: Flat ground surfaces left behind after finer sand and soil particles have been completely blown away.
    • Mushroom, Table, and Pedestal Rocks: Form in part due to wind deflation wearing out susceptible rock-outcrops.

Abrasion

  • Definition and Mechanism:
    • Abrasion is the mechanical wearing away of rock surfaces caused by the friction and impact of rock debris, sand, and silt carried by geomorphic agents such as wind.
    • In the transportation process, wind-borne sand and silt act as cutting tools to abrade the land surface, functioning similarly to a sand-blasting operation alongside the sheer force of momentum (impact).
  • Resulting Landforms & Features:
    • Ventifacts: Rocks that are smoothed, polished, and shaped by the sandblasting action of the wind.
    • Mushroom, Table, and Pedestal Rocks:
      • Desert rock outcrops susceptible to wind abrasion (and deflation) are worn away to leave polished remnants.
      • Winds erode and abrade the lower section of a rock significantly more than the upper section, producing a rock with a slender/narrower stalk or base and a broad, rounded top or table-like cap.
    • Wind Caves: Rock faces suffer continued abrasion and impact from wind-borne sand; initial shallow blowouts are deepened and widened into cave-like openings.
