Erosional landforms of wind Ncert Upsc Notes

  • Mushroom Rocks (Table and Pedestal Rocks): Formed in deserts where wind deflation and abrasion wear away rock outcrops susceptible to erosion. Because winds erode the lower section of a rock more than the upper section, these formations develop a narrower base (slender stalk) and a wider top (broad, rounded pear-shaped cap or flat table top).
  • Deflation Hollows (Blow Outs): Shallow depressions formed when persistent movement of wind currents blows away and removes loose weathered mantle or bare soil.
  • Caves: Formed as rock faces suffer the impact and abrasion of wind-borne sand, first carving shallow depressions (blow outs) that gradually become deeper and wider.
  • Yardangs: Streamlined rock ridges carved and shaped by wind erosion in desert regions.
  • Ventifacts: Rocks that have been smoothed, polished, and shaped by wind-driven sandblasting.
  • Desert Pavements: Flat surfaces left behind in arid regions after finer particles have been blown away by the wind.
